Kathy Santiago: Body-based musicality as an activitist concern

Thursday, April 26, 12:00 - 1:30, Parrish West Parlor

Buffet Lunch at 12PM; Talk begins at 12:30

In working to create accessibility to Dorothy Taubman’s approach to piano technique, Kathy Malyj Santiago has wondered about how misconceptions people harbor about themselves influence them as musical and spiritual beings, and how we as a culture propagate these misconceptions.  Among other things, Kathy will discuss what is problematical for us at this historical juncture when we dismiss as “untalented” a student who doesn’t have an intuitive understanding of how to use the body as an instrument, and ask what is lost when a person is thwarted from a deeply held passion.   Kathy has been a memeber of Swarthmore Friends Meetins since 2004.
